A projecting sign is a sign, usually double-sided, fixed at right angles to a building on a wall bracket, so it can be read by people approaching along the street from either direction.
What projecting and hanging signs can do for businesses in Whitburn
- If your Whitburn street is narrow and fascias are hard to read at an angle, a hanging sign catches shoppers walking towards your door.
- When Whitburn pavements are busy, fascias disappear behind people and parked vans, but a hanging sign above head height stays in view.
- Upstairs businesses in Whitburn, such as salons, studios and accountants, can use a projecting sign at street level to mark a side door.

Do you need permission for a sign in Whitburn?
Scotland runs its own advertisement rules, set out in the 1984 Control of Advertisements (Scotland) Regulations as amended. An unlit sign on your own premises may not need an application, but that depends on its size, its position and whether the building is listed or sits in a conservation area. If consent is needed, the council receives the application, typically submitted online through eDevelopment.scot. On a listed building, listed building consent usually applies too, and fixings into mortar joints are generally preferred. We check the position with you before anything is ordered, and we can draw up and submit the paperwork if you would like us to.
