Red and white lightbox 'GOLDEN NOODLE HOUSE' over a takeaway at night

A lightbox sign is a shallow enclosed box with a translucent face and LED lighting inside, so the whole panel, or just lettering routed into it, glows evenly at night.

Good reasons to look at lightbox signs in March

  • When an old fluorescent box above a March shop flickers, an LED conversion can cost far less than a new sign.
  • Where a March shop has a long fascia, a flex-faced box spans it without the joins rigid acrylic sheets need.
  • If a March convenience store or pharmacy has a sound box frame, a new face refreshes the frontage for less.

What lightbox signs cost in March

The figures in this table are guide prices, from £1,250 to £4,800 per lightbox, and they exclude VAT. They are there to help you plan. A firm price follows the survey or artwork check and is agreed before any work starts.

Consent for illuminated signs in March

Illuminated signs are treated more strictly than unlit ones in England. Deemed consent for illumination is limited, and it does not apply at all in conservation areas, National Parks, National Landscapes, the Broads or areas of special control, so most internally lit or halo-lit fascia and projecting signs need express consent from the council. Decisions usually take up to 8 weeks and consent is normally granted for 5 years. Councils commonly assess brightness against the Institution of Lighting Professionals' guidance PLG05, and lighting should be static. An electrician makes the final mains connection to BS 7671. We can prepare the drawings and photos for your application, or submit it for you.

Lightbox signs in March: questions

Why is there a price range for lightbox signs rather than one figure?

Because jobs vary. The guide of £1,250 to £4,800 per lightbox + VAT spans small, simple work at one end and larger, more involved work at the other. Size, material, finish, access, design time and any consent drawings push the figure up or down. A survey or artwork check lets us fix the price for your job in March.

Can you work to an opening date in March?

Tell us the date when you enquire and we will say plainly whether it looks realistic. Timescales typically depend on how soon the proof is approved, how long production takes and whether consent is needed, which can take several weeks on its own. We plan around your date where we can, but we do not promise one we cannot control.

Why does our old lightbox flicker?

In an older box it's usually failing fluorescent tubes, starters or ballasts, and replacing them one at a time rarely lasts. Patchy light can also mean water has got in. Converting the box to LED fixes the cause, if the frame is sound.

How long does a printed face last?

Several years in most positions, though colours fade noticeably faster on a sunny south-facing frontage. Laminates and UV-resistant inks help slow fading, and reds and yellows usually go first. A box that's easy to re-face keeps future rebrands and refreshes affordable.

Who carries out the work on lightbox signs in March?

The work on site is done by installers working under our contract, and anything that needs making is produced by specialist fabricators. You deal with Smart Signs throughout: we take the enquiry, survey, prepare the design and quote, check consent and coordinate the fitting, so there is one point of contact from first message to handover.

Do lightboxes let in water and insects?

A well-made box is sealed around the face, with small drainage holes along the bottom so condensation can escape. LEDs run much cooler than tubes, so less heat draws insects in. Taking the face off occasionally to clean inside keeps the light even.
